Severe and Sudden Losses of Managed Honey Bees Across the Nation

Commercial beekeepers are currently inspecting their colonies after winter in preparation to transport 90% of the nation's managed honey bees to California for almond pollination. 

Bee Culture Magazine reports they are discovering alarming colony losses so severe and broad, they may impact food security through inadequate pollination services.

Survey results are still being collected, but average recent losses are well over 50%. Combined with losses during other times of year, this additional loss puts many beekeepers at a loss rate of 70%-100% over the past 12 months.

Heather Moynihan

Heather lives in Windham and manages 2 to 4 colonies per season in her home apiary, 60,000 Girls Apiary.  You can ask her for the story behind the name.

She is also serving a four year term as the NH Director for the Eastern Apicultural Society, and in that capacity can be reached at:

Stephen Ludwick

Stephen lives in Concord where he manages several colonies and is a proponent of Apimaye Insulated Hives.

In addition to tending his hives, Stephen serves as a Moderator for Concord's Ward 9, and an Engineer for the Pembroke Fire Department.

Jamie Jobin

Jamie lives in Pembroke and maintains 4 - 5 Langstroth hives and 1 Top Bar hive.  He started with CABA Bee School back in 2020 and enjoys an adult beverage sitting in front of his apiary watching the little ladies coming and going, doing what bees do best.  It's the perfect way to unwind from a busy work schedule.

Randy Galinat

Randy lives in Hillsboro and manages 2 hives.

In addition to tending his hives, Randy works at Family Dollar in Hillsboro as a Customer Service Representative.

Cliff Pattison

Cliff joined the Navy out of high school and attended navy electrical school. His first ship was in Sardinia Italy.  He then attended navy dive school and was stationed on the USS Beaufort out of Pearl Harbor.  After leaving the Navy, he spent 34 years in elevator maintenance, retired and took up bee keeping in 2019 when his wife told him to get a hobby!

Julia Mills

Julia lives in Hillsboro, managing a few hives as well as being a chicken tender.

She loves spending time around the bees, observing their behavior. Julia also enjoys making products of the hive, including lotion, face cream, lip balm, wooden furniture polish, and propolis tincture.
